Musicals Monday

Inspector Gadget isn't a musical, it's actually a REALLY CORNY cartoon that was popular in the 1980s.  He was a bumbling inspector who was always unknowingly saved by his niece, Penny, and dog, Brain from the danger he often found himself in.

This morning I watched Brandon as he sang along to the theme song.  I couldn't help but laugh as the "whoo hoo", and "Go Gadget Go" parts came and he sang it perfectly.  And when he started dancing, that was it for me:  I could hardly stop laughing.

For your Musicals Monday, an unconventional direction.  Brandon singing, and dancing to the Inspector Gadget theme.

A Great Website

Weight Loss Challenge

I spent the afternoon with a friend from high school that I haven't seen in maybe 15 years!  She saw the Weight Loss Challenge on my blog and contacted me a few days ago.

While walking through the Gateway in Salt Lake City, (had to get my exercise in somehow today!) she told me about a website that I've seen before, but had COMPLETELY forgotten about:

This website will calculate what your calorie intake should be each day, depending on your age, height, and how much you want to loose.  You can track those calories by adding the food you eat each day to the calorie tracker, and how many calories you burn doing things as simple as folding laundry or vacuuming your house!  I've always wanted to be able to track the calories I burn while exercising.  This does that for me.

You can also keep track of your measurements with a very simple chart.  It also tells you the correct way to take your measurements.

There are 1,000s of recipes, and the list goes on and on.

You simply have to register to use the website, but the majority of it is completely free.

Again, the website is

Thanks again B for telling me about this great website!

Week Three

Weight Loss Challenge

Saturday, Sunday & Monday
I decided to treat myself to an unhealthy lunch on Saturday.  I've been such a good girl for two weeks!  I paid for it on Sunday, however, as the scale went right back up!

I wasn't very happy with my weight loss last week, and after stepping on the scale today (Monday) to see I've put on 1/2 a pound, I've decided to change up my exercising this week.  I want to loose more, so I need to exercise more; plain and simple.

Years ago I got an exercise tape from a man named Gilad, famous for his ESPN show Bodies In Motion.  Last time I lost a ton of weight, I used his tape and did really well.  It's a very difficult, and LONG 45 minutes, but since it's proven very effective for me in the past, I'm going to try it again.

What doesn't kill me will make me stronger, right?  And it might even speed up my weight loss!

Well, Gilad didn't kill me, however, I did have to slow down a few times.  Great thing is that I felt wonderful when I was done, and when I stepped on the scale today, success:  not only did I loose the 1/2 pound I put on, but another two ounces on top of that....almost a full pound!  Up to 6.2 pounds lost so far!

I am so excited to see the scale finally go down again, I can't wait to use that video again today!

(Later Tuesday)
I am craving chocolate SO BADLY right now!  I want cookies, cake, ANYTHING chocolate!!!  I hate this part of trying to loose weight!

Stepped on the scale today and almost fell over....1.5 pounds down!  I am 2 ounces from 8 pounds lost in three weeks!

It's looking like the change in my exercise regimen is working since the weight is dropping again:  or my body just woke up from the slumber it was in last week!  Either way, I will take it!

Check out my Wordless Wednesday post to learn how I expressed my chocolate craving!

Thursday I put 1/2 a pound back on, and today (Friday), I'm back up to 7 pounds lost.  So, I put the 1.5 pounds I lost on Wednesday back on.  Oh well, my loss for the week is still 1 pound, and I'll take it, even though I'm bummed about it!

Who Sings It Better?

Popular in the 1980s, Christopher Cross sang the theme song for the movie Arthur, (The Best That You Can Be), along with the following song, Sailing.

This has always been one of my favorite songs, but it was released in 1986, before I really knew anything about music.  Years later, it took me a long time to discover who sang this.  I was SO excited when I did!

Next up, a version by NSYNC.  This video is completely cheesy, so try to listen to the song and block out the fact that they're flying through the air!

When I went searching for a cover of this song, I didn't expect to find one that I actually LIKE!

Which version do I prefer?  This is actually a tough call.  I would probably like the NSYNC version better if they weren't flying through the air, and just singing the song.  JC does a fantastic job singing this song.  (Oh, and the only reason I know his name is because of the comments on YouTube!  This boy band was a little past my time!)  That being said, it's a great cover!

However, Christopher Cross will win for me, every single time!

So, who sings it better?

27 Hours To Go!

Until what happens, you might wonder?  Well, until my 6 month wait for my very favorite show on the planet (tied with NCIS, but man, sometimes this one wins!) to FINALLY return with new episodes.  That's right, Burn Notice premieres tomorrow!

I know, I'm a dork, and a little crazy, but who cares?!?

Measurement Update

Weight Loss Challenge

Last week I didn't take my measurements since I'd only been exercising for one week.  Last night, I gave it a try and almost fell over.

Chest:  one inch less (really, that's OK!!)

Waist:  down TWO inches....I know, I can't believe it either!

Hips:  down 1/2 an inch.  Wish that was more, since my hips are the reason I can't fit into my clothes, but I will take it!

Woo, Hoo!  Here we go, week three!

Star Wars Saturday

I hate how the prequels have screwed up certain elements of the original trilogy.  One MAJOR issue that arises due to the changes is Leia's memory of her mother......her REAL mother.  Once again, the writers from 78 Reasons To Hate Star Wars Episode 1 have said it better than I ever could.  (I apologize for the red "copyright" sign in the middle of the screen.  It's the copyright for the software.  I created this clip myself, and have no idea how to get rid of it!)

Leia's Award-Winning Memory

One of the most obvious questions that comes up regarding the prequels and how they relate to the original movies is Leia's memory of her mother.  In Return of the Jedi, Leia tells Luke that she only remembers images of her mother, that she was "very beautiful, but sad."  The major question is this: how does Leia remember her mother if she was only alive together with her mother for a total of one minute?  The answer to this may be: "Well, Leia is talking about her adoptive mother, so there!"  The answer to that is, of course, that Luke says, "Tell me about your mother, your real mother."

Another shoddy apologist answer would be: "Well, Leia was an exceptional baby and because of the Force she remembered her mother."  This is an even worse explanation, seeing that Luke was there at the time and was actually born first.  Being born even a mere twenty seconds earlier than Leia means that he spent a considerable percentage more of his life with his mother than Leia did.

At this point, we can only assume that Princess Leia is just really, really stupid and is actually referring to photographs of her mother that Bail Organa showed her while they cruised around in his Ford convertible.

Once again, thanks George Lucas for screwing up perfection when you made the "special editions" of episodes 4 - 6, and for just about killing the franchise when you made episodes 1 - 3.

YouTube Friday.....Take 2

For the longest time I've wondered how people make videos on YouTube.  So this week I decided to figure out how to do it.

I found a free video software program that had potential until I tried to upload music from itunes.  Because the software sucks, it can't read the music from my computer, and can't add the music.  That wasn't going to work for me, so I was off to find something else.

Then I found another free software program that would upload my music, but there was no way to save what I was working on, and the preview option wasn't working.  So, unless I was ready to spend hours in front of the computer, hoping that it wouldn't freeze in the process, and not be able to watch the video I'd made, this wasn't going to work either.  I was off to find another.

Then I landed on some software that looked like it was going to work.  It's free during it's 30 day trial, but it is wonderful!  I can add the music, preview what I'm doing, it's great.

I uploaded this to YouTube and Facebook yesterday, but here it is for all my blogger fans.  My first video, about my son, Brandon.  Hope you enjoy it.

Week Two

Weight Loss Challenge

Saturday & Sunday

I start week two a little bummed out because I'm maintaining my weight, which is good, but haven't lost any weight since Thursday.  I'm thrilled that I haven't gained though!

Yippie skippie!  Got on the scale today and lost another 0.8 pounds!  5.2 total lost!  I did level one of a Jillian Michaels DVD today and worked muscles that I forgot I had.  This will be the routine I do to help me widdle away my waistline!  And hey, Brandon is enjoying using my weights when I'm not using them, so that's cute!

I was right.....Jillian kicked my butt!  I woke up this morning SO VERY SORE!  I think I'll take a break today and clean the house!  I'll give my body a day to recover and then back to Jillian tomorrow.  Weight stayed the same, so I'm happy.

This was a rough week!  After a day of recovering from Jillian's "take down", I continued exercising, but the scale wasn't moving!  Trying not to get discouraged, I kept eating right.

The scale FINALLY moved this morning!  My total weight loss for this week:  1.6 pounds.

2 week total:  6 pounds even

Here's to hoping the scale moves faster next week!

YouTube Friday

Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull is not only the worst Indiana Jones film, but it is slowly working it's way up the "worst movie" list.  We all know what three movies are ahead of this one on that list.  Funny, all four movies were written by the same man.  Hmmm, interesting.

How It Should Have Ended is a HILARIOUS website that spoofs popular movies and changes the endings to make them better (well, most of the time).

Trapped, Unless Out By 9am

I opened my front door this afternoon to find a notice that says:

"The breezeway in your building is scheduled to be painted on Wednesday, June 15, 2011.  Please be cautious of this and remove all items by your front door, and do not walk across the breezeway from 9am - 4pm as the paint will be wet"

I wasn't exactly sure what the "breezeway" was, so I called down to the office and was told that it's the front part of our apartment, by the door.  I wanted to clarify something, so I asked why we couldn't walk outside our apartment.  They aren't painting the ground, are they?

They are.  So, we're either out of the apartment by 9am tomorrow, or we're trapped inside it until the paint dries!  The lady I was talking to actually said this to me!

I took something to the mailbox and discovered that they have been busy preparing for tomorrow's painting fiasco.  Our doormat was soaking wet, as there is someone spraying down the "breezeway" to the apartments.  I wouldn't have swept my doorway this morning if I'd known someone was going to do it for me!

From our front door, looking out at the "breezeway".  Yes, that's cement that they're going to paint.  Why?  Oh, just to be stupid, waste money, and cause trouble for tenants!

Soaked doormat

The man and machine causing the trouble today

Now I have to decide what I'll be doing tomorrow. I have errands that I need to run, but they won't take 7 HOURS to complete!  I suppose Brandon and I can go hang out with my sister and niece and nephews tomorrow, but then I loose my precious exercise time.

We could attempt to stay home, and just have one massive inside play day.  Games, music, dancing (Brandon LOVES to dance), movies.  I have no idea what we'll do.  Guess I'd better figure it out quickly.

I can't wait to get out of this apartment complex this fall!  I am so tired of living in apartment environments, I'm ready to scream

Musicals Monday

Phineas and Ferb is the funniest cartoon on television.  The series follow Phineas Flynn and his English stepbrother Ferb Fletcher on summer vacation.  Every day the boys embark on some grand new project, which annoys their controlling sister, Candace, who tries to bust them.  Every episode almost always features Perry the Platypus (Agent P), acting as a secret agent to fight an evil scientist named Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz.  The two plots intersect at the end to erase all traces of the boys' project just before Candace can show it to their mother.  This usually leaves Candace very frustrated.  The series is also known for its musical numbers, which have appeared in almost every episode since the first-season.
The music is the reason Phineas and Ferb is appearing today.  The writers took the first episode of the show, tweeked it,  and turned it into a musical.  The following is a clip from that episode where Phineas and Ferb parody well-known musicals, including:

The Phantom Of The Opera
Singin' In The Rain
Fiddler on The Roof
West Side Story
The Music Man
Les Miserables
The King and I

Week One

Weight Loss Challenge

Day One - Saturday

Well, day one is over and I'm feeling pretty good.  I exercised this morning, and wanted to die, but felt great.  I'm quickly discovering foods that I DON'T like:

greek yogurt:  I tried, really I did, but I don't like this stuff!

curry and cilantro:  I made an egg salad sandwich that required curry and cilantro.  No thank you...I threw the whole batch out.

turkey bacon:  Not going to happen.  If I'm going to have bacon, I'll find a lower calorie version of the good stuff!

I drank 4 liters of water, or 128 ounces, double the suggested daily amount.  My bladder forgot what it's like to have A TON of water in it.  I felt like I was 9 months pregnant again.  Hopefully my bladder will adjust soon!

I found a lot of vegetables that I like and will be able to use in many ways in the future.  And I managed to stay under my daily calorie intake, ending at 1639 for the day.

My body made it very clear to me this morning that I exercised for the first time in quite a while yesterday.  I'm feeling my abs (which is good).  I stepped on the scale this morning and was so excited...I'm already down 1.6 pounds!!

Some people say stepping on the scale every day is bad.  I do it because it helps me to know how I can make changes to what I'm eating.  If I've gained, I know what to cut.  If I've lost, I know what to keep doing.  Plus, it helps me discover the best day to weigh myself.

Didn't get as much water in....the three hour church gap made that difficult.

Stepped on the scale again this morning....another 1.2 pounds gone!  2.8lbs total lost in only 2 days!  I'm liking this A LOT!

Exercising was easier today.  Made it through the workout without completely wanting to die!

I'm finding that it's easier to fill up my stomach faster.  Counting calories is really helpful.

Salmon......LUV IT!

And I've discovered a great snack at night when the munchies want to kick in:  1 or 2 tbsp of melted semi-sweet chocolate chips dipped into strawberries.  I use mini chocolate chips, so the calorie count isn't as big, and strawberries are healthy!  It got rid of my sweet tooth and the munchies.

I went to bed last night excited to step on the scale in the morning.  That hasn't happened in a LONG time!  I almost fell over when I saw what the scale said:  another 1.4 pounds lost!  In three days time I've lost 4.2 pounds!!!  I realize that this won't continue forever.  I have A LOT of weight to loose right now, eventually it will level off.  But holy cow, I am LOVING this right now!

Made some blueberry muffins from a weight watchers recipe this morning:  you know it's going to not end well when your crazy, excited son who helped you make them won't eat them!  They were not my opinion!

Exercising was even easier today.  It's almost becoming, dare I say it, FUN!

Another good all around day

Scale this morning:  only 0.2 pounds lost.  I could let it discourage me, but better to loose something than nothing at all!  Plus, it still puts my total weight loss for the week at 4.4 pounds, about a pound a day, which is much more than I thought I'd loose.

I was thinking about not exercising today, but only loosing 0.2 pounds actually motivates me more to get up and get it done.

Lost another 0.4 pounds!  I was really hungry today and had trouble finding good food to eat.  Exercised today.  Brandon was my cheerleader, and exercise partner for about 5 minutes.  It was really funny watching him twist from side to side and kick his legs!

Decided that I'm not going to step on the scale every day anymore.  I put the 0.4 pounds back on!  Depressing!!!

Overall a great first week.  I lost a total of 4.4 pounds!  I'm ahead of schedule and looking forward to seeing what my body does for me next week.

My Son, The Scene Stealer

Last week my sister was a substitute teacher at the last school I long term subbed for before taking on the APA job.  She was in the 3rd grade, teaching the class next to the one I was in.

When the kids found out that she was my sister, they went crazy!

The kids had always wanted me to bring Brandon to school, but that just wasn't something I could do.  With the school year ending, I sent the teacher an email and today Brandon and I went to visit the class.

When we arrived, the 3rd graders were finishing up a talent show.  We walked in as quietly as we could, but the minute the kids saw me, screams of "Mrs. Toale, Mrs. Toale!" could be heard.  They were all so excited to not only see me, but Brandon as well.

The talent show continued, with the teacher I subbed for taking the role of emcee.  Brandon was getting into it, wondering if the kids liked him.  When the teacher asked if anyone else had a talent, Brandon raised his hand and started walking towards the center of the room.  And the fun began.

The teacher asked Brandon what his name was and how old he was.  Thankfully, he answered correctly both times.  Then she asked if he had a talent he wanted to share.  He said yes and she asked him to pick someone out of the audience to help him.  All the kids raised their hands, and he picked out one of the sweetest girls from my class who wasn't raising her hand!  As the kids went crazy, someone asked if Brandon was going to marry this girl, and he said yes, sending them into complete craziness.

Well, Brandon, one to never walk away from attention, just started laughing and laughing.  The teacher asked Brandon if he had a girlfriend, and he told everyone his mommy is his girlfriend!  Right on, Brandon!!

We went back to the classroom, and Brandon ran around with the third graders who were just loving him....mostly the girls.....should that surprise anyone?!?

All the kids wanted my autograph (year book signing), and a few tried to get Brandon's.  He's working on being able to write!  They were asking him if he liked Star Wars (this class and I have a special bond about Star Wars.  They know how much I absolutely LOVE it!), and trying to get any information out of him that they could.  It was too funny.

My son, the attention loving, "pick me, pick me" shouting, four year old, stole the show.  It was the most hilarious thing to watch.  I only wish I had my camera with me.  That would have been too perfect!

Quick, Get That Dove Outta Here!!

Weight Loss Challenge

Today I did my food shopping, spending more time (and money...sorry honey!) in a grocery store than I think I've EVER spent.  The exciting part is that I am so anxious to try some of the food I bought, and simply eat the stuff I know I like!

My weekly menu is posted, my healthy food is on one side of the refridgerator and my snacks are at eye level in the pantry.  Tonight I will take my measurements for future comparisons (I'll share them later, if I am as successful as I'm hoping!), and eat the remainder of the Dove chocolate in the house.  Because, let's face it:  Dove chocolate is a TERRIBLE thing to waste!

Tomorrow I will weigh myself and begin with a healthy breakfast and exercise.  Water, water, water, all day long, with a healthy snack every three hours.  A food journal and calorie counting will help me stay on track, and of course I'll be blogging about my progress....whether good or bad!

I am ready, I WILL do this!

Our Second, First Anniversary!

A few days ago I was probing Nick to see if he remembered what day was coming up.  (Oh wives and their silly little games!)  He says, "You mean, our second, first anniversary?"  Not only did he remember, but he came up with the PERFECT way of stating it!

For any of you who are unfamiliar with our story, read Our First Marriage and Finding Our Way Back Home.

It's been a year since we put our family back together, and we couldn't be happier!  Moving to Utah was the BEST THING we EVER DID!  I was just offered a teaching position for the fall in 3rd grade at the American Preparatory Academy, Brandon is enjoying preschool, and being near his cousins, and Nick is working his behind off for us.  We're looking forward to the wonderful changes my new job will bring us.

This song, by Rascal Flatts meant a lot to me this time last year:

And this song, by Shania Twain, is significant today:

Happy second, first anniversary Nick!!
