30 Days of Star Wars: Day 16

A Scene that Makes Me Happy

I've always loved Yoda.  Not the Yoda from the prequels who speaks wrong and looks completely different, but the Yoda from the original trilogy.  This Jedi master has given us some of the greatest advice of all time, and one of the funniest scenes from any of the movies.

The scene that always brings a smile to my face is when Yoda and Luke first meet.  Yoda was testing Luke's patience, and Luke failed miserably.  It is so fun to watch Yoda mess with Luke's belongings, eat his food, and fight with R2-D2.

Many people don't know this, but Frank Oz, the puppeteer responsible for bringing Yoda to life, also provides the voice for many of the muppets, including Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and Fozzie Bear.

30 Days of Star Wars: Day 15

Favorite Moment From Return of The Jedi

I love the first and last 45 minutes of this movie.  Watching Luke Skywalker become a Jedi Knight is a fascinating journey that ends with this movie. Right out of the gate, he begins by helping to save Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt.

I don't have the trilogy on Blu-Ray, (I was tired of all the changes) but this scene was added to show Luke completing the construction of his new lightsaber, and how it ended up inside R2-D2.  I could do without the part where Vader is calling to Luke.  We've already heard him do this multiple times. However, the scene does a great job of showing us how Luke has matured.

My favorite moment of Return of the Jedi would be the sail barge attack.  Han Solo was defrosted, but they all got caught in the process, so Luke had to come help get them all out.  He is also unsuccessful, but it's clear that they knew this was a possibility because he'd put his lightsaber inside R2-D2 and knew they'd be put on the sail barge.

This scene is fast paced, and the music is one of my favorite pieces.  If I had to pick an actual one moment that is my favorite, it would be when Luke is giving the signal to Lando, Leia, and R2-D2, and then when he jumps down from the plank and flips while waiting for his lightsaber from R2-D2.

Believe it or not, I couldn't find a clip of the entire scene on YouTube!  What I have below is a clip from the first 90 seconds of the scene.  Enjoy!

30 Days of Star Wars: Day 14

Favorite Moment From Revenge Of The Sith

By NO MEANS a movie without flaws, it's the only prequel I can handle watching.  There are two moments that stick out to me.  The first is when Anakin is deciding whether to help Mace Windu take down Emperor Palpatine, or help the Emperor so that he can save Padme.  They cut to both Padme and Anakin, and the emotion on their faces is more than we've seen in the past 3 movies combined!  Not a word is said, yet you can see in that moment that Anakin truly is conflicted, and doesn't know what to do.

My second favorite moment is the fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin on Mustafar.  The prequels were leading up to this moment, and 3 minutes into the following clip is my favorite.  I also really enjoy the very end of the battle when Obi-Wan is pouring his heart out to Anakin.

30 Days of Star Wars: Day 13

Disney Buys Star Wars

(originally written in November, 2012)

"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened" - Obi-Wan Kenobi

Unless you've been living somewhere with no access to the internet, you've probably heard all about this deal, and seen this picture.  George Lucas has sold Lucasfilm Ltd, Skywalker Sound, and Industrial Light & Magic to Disney for a whopping 4 BILLION dollars.  Oh, and Disney is already planning on making three more Star Wars movies set after Return of the Jedi....with George involved, in a small role.

When I first read about this, I almost threw up...and I'm not kidding!  DISNEY will now own EVERYTHING that has to do with my BELOVED Star Wars, and Indiana Jones....was George Lucas on drugs?  Disney is all about cartoons, not live action movies; are the new movies going to be cartoons? (more on that thought later)  My mind also immediately went to what a stupid idea three more movies is.  Does Disney not remember the train wreck now known as The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith?

I don't have anything against Disney, really I don't.  I watch Phineas & Ferb, and other Disney channel shows with Brandon every day.  Each year Disneyworld hosts a huge Star Wars weekend where, among other events, they host Dance Off with the Star Wars Stars.  It makes me laugh every year. Here's part of the 2011 weekend.

I just don't like this idea....at all.

I read articles about this for a few days, knowing that I was definitely going to write about this.  I mean, come on, I have a Star Wars Saturday page on my blog!  Instead of writing about my snap judgement, I waited to see if any of the research would change my mind.  It did....a little bit.

So here it is; the good, the bad, the ugly, and the potential surrounding the Disney/Lucas deal.

The Good:
Disney owns Marvel.  I didn't know this until a few days ago.  They are responsible for Iron Man, Thor, The Avengers.  Let's face it...those movies are AWESOME.  Hope began to spring.

Disney owns Pixar.  George Lucas created Pixar, sold it to Steve Jobs in the 1980s, and then Jobs sold it to Disney.  Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Cars, are all Pixar movies, and are FANTASTIC.  Knowing that Disney has also created great movies with Pixar, my hope continued to grow.  Maybe they wouldn't screw this up.

George Lucas won't be the director of the next three movies.  HALLELUIAH!!!  This is probably the BEST news.  Of the six Star Wars movies, by far the best one is The Empire Strikes Back; directed by Irvin Kershner.  If Disney springs for a great director, like Joss Whedon, J.J. Abrams, Jon Favreau, maybe there is potential.

This one is both good and bad.  In regards to the story for episodes 7-9:  most hard core Star Wars fans consider The Thrawn Trilogy to be the only way to go.  It is the Bible for the Star Wars expanded universe.  It begins five years after Return of the Jedi.  All the expanded universe (EU for short) books began here, with this incredible story.  Hope continued to spring that maybe these books would be adapted to the screenplay.

I read that Lucas will be giving the majority of the 4 billion to charity.  That made me smile more than you know.  Kudos to George for that.  However, I'm a charity....could you send some my way, George?!?

The Bad:

The Clone Wars is a very successful cartoon currently on Cartoon Network.  It is the story of what happens to Anakin, Obi-Wan, and all the other Jedi and Sith after Attack of the Clones and before Revenge of the Sith.  It's a fantastic cartoon and it works because there are familiar characters.  It also allows for many characters to be created that we've never seen before.  What happens to it?  I read that they might be moving it over to the Disney XD channel.  Sorry Cartoon Network; looks like you're going to loose one of the biggest shows on your channel.

I read the next day that the new Star Wars movies were going to be original stories.  That means no Thrawn Trilogy.  There was a collective sigh among fans when we heard this.  Where hard core fans wanted to see this story on the big screen, myself included, we also realized that meant new actors for our heroes.  NO ONE except Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher can play Luke, Han, and Leia.  There's NO WAY they would, or even COULD do it now.  Beside the fact that they are in their late 60s, early 70s, they wouldn't be DUMB enough to do it again.  Heck, George Lucas had to beg Harrison Ford to come back for Return of the Jedi.  Ford thought Han Solo should've died in the carbon freezing.

How do you bring these three crucial characters into the story without replacing the actors?  And if you try, will Star Wars fans accept another actor in those roles....probably not.  I will have a very hard time accepting that, if it happens.

The Ugly:
(I'm really upset about this one!)

Leia is now considered a Disney Princess.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?  Disney princesses sing, dance, talk to animals, dishes, and trees.  In comparison to the Star Wars universe, Disney princesses want superficial things.  Ariel wanted to walk on the sand, Snow White was waiting for her prince to come, Jasmine was bored and wanted to be shown the world, as was Rapunzel.  They are railroad thin, and wield frying pans as weapons, NOT BLASTERS!  Disney can own Star Wars, but LEIA IS NOT A DISNEY PRINCESS!  SHE'S NOT EVEN A REAL PRINCESS!! Remember, Georgie Boy made the prequels and we discovered that Leia isn't really a princess, because Padme was an ELECTED queen, not a "real" queen...but I digress.

Look at these pictures, what is wrong with them?

Beside the fact that Leia isn't dressed in a nice princess gown, she's holding a blaster!  Yep, real Disney princess-like, don't you agree?

I'm also simply not excited about three more movies.  I remember in 1997 when Lucas re-released the original (well, the altered original) in the theaters.  We were so excited about the prequels.  And then they were released.  They were, and still are AWFUL.  And after the prequels, and the many therapy sessions I had to attend after their release, I don't want three more movies!

Does this picture move anyone to puke like it does me?  The idea that our beloved characters are being reduced to look like Disney characters makes me sad.  It's OK if it's one weekend a year, but now it will become a staple.  Goofy dressed up like Darth Vader....really?  And why is he wearing red boxers on the outside of his outfit?  I fear that Star Wars is being turned into a big joke.

The Potential:
In the end it comes down to the story.  Will it be live action or a cartoon?  A great live action movie, with a great director has potential.  If they're able to find a way around not using our three main heroes, or finding actors who are very similar to those we know and love, it might work.  No more Jar-Jar Binks and other stupid characters that make us want to poke our eyes out with a fork!

I hope that it works.  I hope that the legacy of Star Wars, which managed to survive the prequels, and Lucas's CONSTANT revisions of the originals, can make it through this.  I am so skeptical, but for the sake of my beloved movies, I hope that whatever comes to theaters in 2015 doesn't suck.  I'm not holding my breath.

In Conclusion:
We've gone from this COMPLETE AWESOMENESS:

to this COMPLETE AWFULNESS:

The world will never be the same again.

Vader, I couldn't have said it better if I wanted to.

30 Days of Star Wars: Day 12

Star Wars Parodies

I love songs that make fun of my favorite movie franchise in the world.  First up is a cover of the Carley Rae Jeppson song "Call Me Maybe".  It's very catchy, and once you understand the words (which are provided below), it gets stuck in your head.  My favorite part?  From 2:16-2:25, of course!!  Whoever did this not only did a great job, but has an extensive knowledge of these movies.  I don't know if I could've done this!

I threw a wish in the well
Don't ask me, I'll never tell
I looked at you as it fell
And now you're in my way

I trade my soul for a wish
Credit and droids for a kiss
I wasn't looking for this
But now you're in my way

Your stare was holding ripped jeans
Skin was showing
Hot night
Wind was blowing
Where you think you're going baby?

CHORUS:
Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy
But here's my number, so call me maybe
It's hard to look right at you baby
But here's my number, so call me maybe

Hey, I just met you and this is crazy
But here's my number, so call me maybe
And all the other boys, try to chase me
But here's my number, so call me maybe

You took your time with the call, I took no time with the fall
You gave me nothing at all, but still you're in my way
I beg and borrow and steal
At first sight and it's real
I didn't know I would feel it, but it's in my way

Your stare was holding ripped jeans
Skin was showing
Hot night
Wind was blowing
Where you think you're going baby?

CHORUS

Before you came into my life, I missed you so bad
I missed you so bad, I missed you so, so bad
Before you came into my life, I missed you so bad
And you should know that, I missed you so, so, bad

Weird Al has always been great at doing parodies.  His version of Michael Jackson's "Bad"....."Fat", is known world wide.  Back when the Star Wars trilogy was released in theaters, and The Phantom Menace came out, he made parodies of both.  And they are hilarious!

First up, using the song "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow, here is The Star Wars Cantina. Click here to see the video, the words are below.  I'll warn you though:  this song is even more catchy than "Call Me Maybe"!  Then watch his song, "The Saga Begins", using the song "American Pie", by Don McClean which is a spoof of The Phantom Menace.  I laugh every time I hear these songs!
(Help me Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope)
(Help me Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope)
(R2-D2)
Her name was Leia, she was a princess,
with a danish on each ear, and Darth Vader drawing near
so R2-D2 found Ben Kenobi, (Obi-Wan)
He'd have to put the Death Star plans into the Rebellions hands,
So Luke and Obi-Wan had to get to Alderaan
So they stopped into Mos Eisly to have a drink with Han

At the Star Wars, Star Wars cantina
The weirdest creatures you've ever seena
Here at the Star Wars, Star Wars cantina,
music and blasters and old Jedi masters
at the Star Wars.

(Oona Koota Solo?)
His name was Solo (Han solo), he was a pilot
with a blaster at his side and a smile twelve parsecs wide,
there with Chewbacca, he was a Wookie,
They met with Luke and Obi-Wan about the Millennium Falcon,
docking bay ninety four(ninety four), stormtroopers at the door
With a flash of Bens lightsaber, now there's an arm on the floor

At the Star Wars, Star Wars cantina
The weirdest creatures you've ever seena
Here at the Star Wars, Star Wars cantina,
music and blasters and old Jedi masters
at the Star Wars. (Mos Eisly Spaceport, you will never
find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy,
we must be cautious)

His name was Yoda, he was a muppet.
Darth Vader was so bad and by the way he's Luke's dad,
Luke kissed his sister, his hand got cut off
In that galaxy far far away, Luke has had a lousy day,
Boba Fett was so mean, Jabba had bad hygiene,
Why didn't they all just relax, back on Tatooine

At the Star Wars, Star Wars cantina
The weirdest creatures you've ever seena
Here at the Star Wars, Star Wars cantina,
music and blasters and old Jedi masters
at the Star Wars. (The Force will be with you...always)

was a princess,

A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the Queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy...
CHORUS:
Oh my my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn't even old enough to shave
But he can use the Force, they say
Ahh, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he's just nine and she's fourteen
Yah, he's probably gonna marry her someday
Well, I know he built C-3PO
And I've heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it's true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin' ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I knew who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

CHORUS

Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh, the Council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the Force?
They interview the kid
Oh, training they forbid
Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said "Now listen here"
"Just stick it in your pointy ear"
"I still will teach this boy"

CHORUS

We caught a ride back to Naboo
'Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would've liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn't long at all before
Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some Gunguns died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin'
The battle droids were broken
And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy

And I was singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

CHORUS

And finally, one of the best parodies ever.  The Piano Guys did a fantastic cover of some of the most well known songs from Star Wars.  This video also made The Piano Guys a household name.
